Get out of the smoke and join FOWL (The Friends of the Winthrop Library) and rare book conservator Jim Hinz for this fun event at Your Space@TwispWorks! You’ll learn to make three simple books to take home with and you all you need to bring is a love of books and a pair of scissors!
JIM HINZ is working as a carpenter in Mazama. He dedicated the previous 20 years of his career to book and paper conservation. Until recently he was the director of book conservation at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia. Prior to that he served as the head of library conservation at Hagley Museum and Library where he also co-curated and designed the exhibition Raymond Loewy: Designs for a Consumer Culture, which received a NEA American Masterpieces Grant in 2005 and toured nationally. Jim has conserved rare books and documents for both public and private collections, including 14th century vellum manuscripts, John James Audubon’s Birds of America, Bruce Springsteen’s lyric notebooks, and early German-American weaving pattern books for The Free Library of Philadelphia. In addition to his work as a conservator, Jim was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts in 2003 for crafts. He received an MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and a BA in Mass Communications from the University of Minnesota.
This event is offered free of charge and sponsored by the Friends of the Winthrop Library.
