Entomologist Bob Gillespie of Wenatchee will be giving a presentation on the status of pollinators and what the world would be like if they didn’t exist. The lecture will cover the types of pollinators in the Methow as well as an introduction to to pollination.

There will also be pollinator nature hike leaving from TwispWorks at 1:00 pm for the rearing ponds.

Art on My Desk

Barry Stromberger’s GMO desk

Five of TwispWorks partners (plus one employee) designed desks for ”Art on My Desk,” a senior project from LBHS student Sage Abate.

TwispWorks’ artists Steve Ward, Jae Cremin, Donna Keyser, Barry Stromberger and Matt Armbrust each contributed desks for the project as well as TwispWorks’ Director of Partnerships and Operations, Tori Karpenko.

The desks were salvaged from a LBHS surplus with the hope of creating art out of the ordinary. They were auctioned off at The Revelers concert on April 20th with proceeds going to arts education. Check out the desks at the Art on my Desk website.

The TwispWorks Foundation is seeking a Development and Outreach Coordinator, an AmeriCorps VISTA postition.

Rolling interviews; hiring deadline May 24; start date approximately July 15, 2013

Overview of the Position
The TwispWorks Foundation seeks an enthusiastic individual to fill the one-year, full-time position of “Development and Outreach Coordinator” on the TwispWorks campus in Twisp, WA.

The TwispWorks Foundation is a support organization raising funds and awareness to help transform an old Forest Service ranger station into a center for economic development in the areas of arts, education, technology and agriculture.

This AmeriCorps VISTA position will establish fundraising and volunteer management systems for the TwispWorks Foundation, and will coordinate events and media outreach for the Foundation. The VISTA member’s duties will include creating databases, developing volunteer recruitment and tracking systems, coordinating fundraising and outreach events, developing marketing materials, conducting a membership/annual fund campaign and helping to build regional awareness of TwispWorks and the TwispWorks Foundation through media outreach.

Valley Teen Center presents Methow Voices

Join the Valley Teen Center the first two weekends in May for Methow Voices, a rare chance to look into the minds of Methow Valley youth.

In this theater piece, local teens will perform monologues taken from interviews with their peers over the past six months, reflecting on everything from the fate of our environment to what it’s like to grow up in the valley.

The event will also feature a performance by Red Lotus SEEDs, a group of local young dancers, and will include dessert and a discussion after the show.

The grant will support the Executive Director’s time to work on funding the renovation of the North Warehouse and other TwispWorks buildings. Renovating these historic structures will help create jobs, attract visitors, grow small businesses and revitalize downtown Twisp!

Wolves: Discovery, to Recovery

Jay Kehne will be speaking as part of the Last Sunday Lecture Series highlighting the Burke Museum’s traveling exhibit, Wolves in Washington, that will be on exhibit at the Methow Valley Interpretive Center in Twisp from April 27 through July 7.

Jay Kehne has a BS in Wildlife Biology and BS in Soil Science from Washington State University. He worked 33 years for USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service developing partnerships between ranchers, hunters and governments. Jay was appointed by the Governor in December 2011 to serve a 6-year term as a Washington Fish & Wildlife Commissioner. He currently works as an Outreach Associate for Conservation Northwest.

Indigo Dyeing Workshop

A dress dyed with natural indigo

Indigo dyeing has a long and rich history as one of the oldest compounds used in the textile industry. Popular throughout the ancient civilizations of Asia and the Fertile Crescent, Indigo served as the foundation of the textile industry and was referred to as Blue Gold.

Connect with the past and learn how to dye with natural Indigo in this two-day workshop with local textile artist Sara Ashford. Sara will be running two pots of indigo and offering various ways of patterning, including shibori and pole wrapping.

Please contact Sara to register for her quickly-filling workshop. Participants are invited to attend either day or both days – please indicate if you would like to bring your own fabric to dye in advance.
